I know you love historical fiction as much as I do. This one is set in the "New West" California. This book doesn't pull any punches -- life was tough, people and animals got hurt. But the humour of this book is so well done, to offset that bleakness. The economy of language communicates a lot with few. The character/narrator voice SHINES in this book -- Characters that don't like to 'show' their emotions but feel deeply. And the pacing! From one rompy encounter to the next. If you want a masterclass in any of those tools, and also just read a ripping good story -- this book is for you!
