Libby! Thank you SO much for your donation to Booktober -- and I hope your own reading has been going well this month!
For everyone who donates to my page -- I'm going to give a personalised book recommendation! This one is for you Libby: The Sisters Brothers. It was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2011.
I know you love historical fiction as much as I do. This one is set in the "New West" California. This book doesn't pull any punches -- life was tough, people and animals got hurt. But the humour of this book is so well done, to offset that bleakness. The economy of language communicates a lot with few. The character/narrator voice SHINES in this book -- Characters that don't like to 'show' their emotions but feel deeply. And the pacing! From one rompy encounter to the next. If you want a masterclass in any of those tools, and also just read a ripping good story -- this book is for you!

Thank you Kennedy for the support!! As promised, for everyone who donates, I will give a personal book recommendation! Kennedy, for you I recommend The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nght-Time. This book is an extreme example of the naive unreliable narrator -- where an author can ask a reader to pick up details when the POV narrator does not pick up these details. Have a read, absorb this technique, and then find your way with a more subtle version -- I think that'd be incredibly exciting.
